Junior World Championships: Table tennis jewel Kaufmann wins gold

The German table tennis hopeful Annett Kaufmann is the best in the world in her age group. The 18-year-olds, who caused a stir at the Summer Olympics, won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships.

In the final in Helsingborg, Sweden, the high school graduate beat the Chinese Zong German with 4:2 sets.

“I can’t believe it, it feels so surreal,” said Kaufmann from SV DJK Kolbermoor after the success against the gold medalist of the same age in doubles and mixed doubles. Kaufmann is the first world champion for under 19s from Germany, Mia Griesel (Berlin) completed the good German individual result in Sweden with bronze. Patrick Baum last triumphed among men in 2005.
